Function and Form: Artful Approaches to Everyday Living 

September 13 - October 5, 2019


Functional Art: a name given to any object that serves a utilitarian purpose beyond adding to the aesthetic of a space. This includes anything from artfully made coasters and painted lamps, to artisan-crafted tables and chairs. Summit Artspace is looking for functional artists to exhibit their work this September in a first-of-its-kind show.  Creative, innovative approaches to the intersection of art and function featuring multiple mediums and design are requested. Traditional artists and nontraditional artists are welcome and encouraged.

Karen Starr is an interior designer and co-owner of Hazel Tree Design Studio. Founded in 2010 by Karen and her husband, Jon Haidet, Hazel Tree has grown from a custom picture framing and interior design studio to a showroom and studio that creates whimsical and unique designs of both interior and exterior spaces and also produces art installations and experiences.
 


Jurying will be done via digital image. Artists may submit one artwork piece per submission for consideration, and may submit up to three high quality digital images (.jpg, .pdf, .tiff. .png) of the artwork entered. Artists may submit up to three entries for consideration in the show, but each entry must be submitted separately. The images must accurately represent the work and accepted work must be professionally presented for exhibition (see notes below). Artist's name cannot be in the in the file name of digital images. 


Eligibility:  The exhibition is open to artists residing in or attending school in the following Ohio counties: Summit, Cuyahoga, Medina, Stark and Portage. Pieces that have been displayed in any gallery in Summit Artspace are not eligible. 


Notification of the juror’s decision will be made via email by 11:59 pm on Monday, August 19, 2019. Accepted work must be delivered to the Main Gallery at Summit Artspace on East Market on Monday, September 9, 2019, during the hours of 10:00 am - 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm.  All accepted artists are expected to gallery sit at least one shift during the show.

Notes: Size and Weight Limits: 

  • Final installation size of 2-D work (and/or all artwork to be hung on a wall) cannot exceed 4' (48") wide or 7' (84") high. Cannot exceed 50 pounds.
  • 3-D work must be able to fit through a standard doorway and can be feasibly moved by an average person.

All work must be identified (labelled) with the artist name and contact information when delivered. Accepted work must be delivered ready to install with appropriate hardware for size and weight of piece. Screws are not used for any installation. 2-D works must be appropriately wired, no saw tooth hangers. Summit Artspace has a limited number of pedestals available. The artist may be required to provide a special display fixture appropriate for the installation. Please note all display fixtures are subject to Summit Artspace approval. Suitability of works which must be suspended, require a power source, are between 35-50 pounds, are close to the size limitations or have other special installation requirements will be determined on an individual basis. Professional installation will be provided by Summit Artspace. Care will be taken when handling and displaying all artwork, however Summit Artspace waives responsibility for either damage or loss of artwork.
